Our Methodology

We use a structured, peer-selection process—backed by objective checks—to identify the surgeons other surgeons trust most. If a top surgeon needed care themselves, who would they choose?

In 30 Seconds

  • Surgeons are nominated by a panel of their peers—not by paying a fee or applying.
  • We verify nominations against experience, credentials, and publicly available records.
  • Only surgeons who meet our criteria and are repeatedly named make the list.
  • There is no cost to be listed. We do not sell placement on this list.
  • This is a starting point for patients—not a substitute for your physician's advice.

Our process identifies the surgeons that other surgeons would trust for themselves or their families.

1. We start with a national panel.

We assemble a panel of recognized shoulder specialists from across the country—surgeons with established track records in high-volume, complex shoulder surgery.

2. Panelists name the surgeons they personally trust.

Each panel member independently identifies colleagues they would personally choose for their own shoulder surgery or for a close family member.

3. We review every name against core criteria.

Nominated surgeons are reviewed against clear criteria around experience, outcomes signals, leadership, and professional standing.

4. Only those who meet the bar—and are repeatedly named—make the list.

Surgeons who meet these criteria and are consistently named across panelists form the DoctorsDoctor list for that specialty.

What we don't do:

  • • No self-nominations
  • • No applications
  • • No fees to be considered or listed
